Tick Season Has Started Along Our Local Coastline

With warmer weather arriving and spring beginning, tick activity is increasing across the coastal areas of Southport, Birkdale, Formby and Ainsdale.

The dunes and surrounding grassland are particularly high-risk environments for ticks. Long grass, scrub and sandy vegetation create ideal conditions for them to thrive — and dogs exploring these areas are more likely to pick them up.

After walking in the dunes, we recommend checking:

• Around and inside the ears

• Between the toes

• Under the collar

• Armpits and groin

• Around the eyes and lips

Ticks often feel like small, firm bumps attached to the skin and should be removed promptly using an appropriate tick removal tool.

Regular flea, tick and worm prevention significantly reduces the risk of tick-borne disease. At Ainsdale Vets, preventative treatment is available individually, or included as part of our care plan.

If you regularly walk your dog in the dunes around Southport, Birkdale, Formby or Ainsdale and would like advice on tick prevention, our team is happy to help.
